Thanks. I should have searched first. Looks like a giant neodymium magnet does the trick. Now to find one the right size.

Tear apart on old computer hard drive. The magnets that are used to position the heads are very strong, as in "don't get your finger between two of them" strong. They look like part (1/4 - 1/ circles and are glued into the mechanism. 3.5" desktop/server drives have larger magnets than the smaller 2.5" laptop drives.

Haven't had my M1081 on the road long enough to experience the problem, but good to know that there's a simple solution.
