Loose leaking oil filter?

So we had our first real good cold snap of the year here in GA. And when I went to start my M1028 the other morning (30° outside), and it sprayed about 1/4 QT of oil out from around the oil filter gasket. It only leaked for a second, and once pressurized and warmed the leak stopped. This must have happened a few times before I noticed it, because there was oil sprayed everywhere on that side of the motor. Because of this I didn't figure out it was the filter till the next morning when I could watch it. The filter was only about an 1/8th of a turn loose, and I really cranked on it! Have any of you experienced this before?..... (6.2, K&N filter, 15W40 Rotella)

I've never used a K&N oil filter, but I don't personally care for their air filters. Anyhow, did you possibly stack gaskets? (Old filter gasket sticks to the engine and causes a double seal)

Yeah I checked that it wasn't that. When I was a kid I worked at a jiffy lube in the pit, doing 30+ cars a day. I've never seen or even heard of a filter doing this. I mite try calling K&N to see what excuse they can come up with LOL!

Well I called K&N, I'll have to take back my previous statement about them[thumbzup]. They said it sounds like a defective bypass valve issue. They are overnighting me a new filter , and would like me to call back Monday to report how the new filter is working. And that they will then send me "a couple new filters for my trouble". So I guess your never too old to learn something new, about something as common as an oil filter:idea:.
