Losing power on a hill

Fuel gauge is inop.
Waiting to get it into the shop.

In the past I've run out of fuel when the engine died going up a long, fairly steep hill.
Filled it with fuel and its okay.

The other day I was climbing a hill and I lost power near the crest. At the top, all was well.
When I got home I eyeballs the fuel level (thanks to the wide filler). It seemed to have maybe a 1/ tank...looked like 2-3 inches (it was just below a ledge on the forward part of the tank.

I can accept gas flowing away from the pickup tube if the Jeep were almost empty, but by my visual check, it looks to have more than minimal fuel.

Anyone have similar experience?
Do I have less fuel than I think I have?
or....
Weak fuel pump?
Pickup tube pointing forward/bent?
Something Dave can check when he's installing new sending unit?
