I found a 1986 M1009 with 40XXX miles. The "dealer" says it needs to be jumped and will run for a few minutes before it dies. They claim it is the charging system, and it will need to be towed or trailered. Thoughts please. Is this just as safe a bet as a GL purchase. I know at least if I make the drive to see it in person I can walk from this one. Is there more at risk here than just batteries and alternators? I have discovered that I NEED a M1009. Could this be the one? Thanks.:?

Everyone "could be the one" lol. Price, rust, tires, glass, interior, depends upon over all condition and what is "really" wrong with it.

Soooo, to be less/more blubbering: How much are new alternators? Or to have them rebuilt? Is running for a few minutes and dying really an electical issue with a diesel, or could it be more related to fuel delivery problems-IP ect.?:lost:

Alternators are generally > $100, or you can rebuild yourself for about $35 each. Keep in mind that the alternators are not the same as the civilian model because of the isolated ground. The engine dying could be related to the charging issue as the fuel cut-off solenoid will stop the fuel under a low voltage condition. If it continues to run while the jumpers are in place or the batteries have a good charge then it is not likely a charging issue that is keeping it from running.
