Greetings again....
So being the purist in most things I noted that the batteries in the new M1009 were not 'military' spec / type, etc. I have an M818 that these batteries were installed in with good luck. So I thought I'd see if they had any at the same battery place in town. Turns out that they were removing these 6at type (I think) batteries from gen sets at some local facility and they ended up with a few that are exactly a year old. One difference is that these batteries are closed and unserviceable. My M818 batteries are lead acid.
So these batteries were installed into my M1009 at the battery shop and I noticed an immediate difference in the charging behavior right after start up. Before, the battery gauge would slowly rise, level off, then dip slightly to just above the middle of the green arc. Also, the belt would squeal every-so-slightly until this exercise was complete.
New batteries: Now the gauge jumps to the top of the green arc immediately, settles very little, and no belt squeal. Both of my old batteries tested good. As good as the new ones even (I watched).
So, is there really any advantage to the bigger 6at batteries?? Not sure....
