M101 conversion

Ok, I am converting my M101 to a standard rear truck axel with 6 lugs. We have pulled the spider gear on the top and bottom and replaced the locking center pin, thingy.

I do not intend on putting brakes on this so i have stripped out the internals (shoes etc.) Do I need to put the brake drum back on or will it be safe without it?

Looking at ways to cut down on weight as well.

The drums will help with keeping the road crap from getting into the seals. Also the threaded portion of the studs holding the bearing assembly will rust up quickly, which might cause you problems down the road if you ever need to replace them.
