mmm I just screwed mine to the cross-member above the left tail light. If the tailgate is level, as you say, it would still show.

I also was able to get e motorcycle sized plate and added a light for it as well. I drilled holes and used self taping screws to hold.

I see you got the full size. Your only option?

screwing it to the top of the gate will allow it to be seen even with the gate all the way down (in the position that covers the lights though...)

And YES, the wind will try to flip it up when you are driving, though a small magnet screwed to the plate will cure that.
