M101A2 with lots of racks.

Picked this up Monday.
Trailer stencils indicated it was from a Signal Brigade.
It had a lot of strange racks on the sideboards and 4 big floor racks for who knows what.
Any idea what these were for?

The sideboards are teak underneath the CARC.

Not bad for $200

Installed new bearings/Races and seals in it today. Also installed new trailer power cord and brand new military tail lights.
The only thing wrong with it was it needs a new brake fluid reservoir cap. Will be here Monday.

Looks like racks for ordnance of some sort. Signal Co.? Who knows. Great score. I paid 850$ for mine with bows and cover. It was a recent rebuild. Great deal for sure. Congrats. Only thing about the A2s I don't like is the width between wheel wells. I use mine all the time at the ranch off road. Tow it behind a Ram 2500 5.9 6 speed or the 1028. Awesome trailer for sure. And they're getting harder to find.

You can tell this trailer was made at the factory with all the racks.
Close to 150lbs worth.
Lots of holes in it now that their removed.
Sideboards are in excellent condition. Was surprised to find the teak wood under the CARC.
Looks to be original and only painted twice. Green camo at factory then tan for the sandbox.
Left gate has been replaced with composite and a new right gate was included in the pile of stuff in trailer.

Ranch duty is exactly what this will be doing. Right behind my M1008A1.
Will finish the repaint today. Going back green.

I am doing my bearings soon. My question is: how did you tighten the retaining bolt on the axle spindle? I have been given lots of conflicting advise. The best of which seems, tighten it so the wheel doesn't turn. Then loosen it off and install the cotterpin.

1 1/4" socket (I think)

Just spin hub as you tighten it up.
It will start to get hard to turn.
When it really gets hard to turn, back off a bit.
You want some resistance but not a lot or bearing will get too hot.

If you spin hub and it spins freely it's too loose.
If it Takes a lot of effort to turn by hand then it's too tight.
A fine line I know but it's very hard to describe how it should feel.

Once tire is on, when you give it a good spin, tire should do at least one complete rotation. No more, maybe just a touch less depending on how much muscle you used.
Your brakes should just have a very slight drag on drum also.

Youll know after you tow it a few miles. If you can't keep your hand on it then it's too tight.

Use good parts. The cheap stuff will not last.

I think it turned out ok.
Wheels are shiny. They are NOS CUCV wheels that were brand new in the box. Not going to spray paint on them.
The bow corners are painted now.

It tows and brakes like a dream.

Things done to trailer.

New paint.
New bearings/races
New seals
New Brake shoes
Drums resurfaced
New GM lug nuts
NOS GM CUCV wheels. Were still in box.
New master cylinder
New vent cap
New wheel cylinders
Flush brake lines.
New surge brake shock.
New surge brake lockout pin (aircraft pushpin)
New tail lights with the LED blackouts.
New trailer power cord.
New stencils
New silicone brake fluid decal.
New canvas chain protectors.

Repaired right side hand brake lever.
Was bent so disassembled/fixed/painted
Cables were great and both work great now.

Pulled all side-rail pins and cleaned, painted and greased. New cotterpins on everything.

All new grease at every zert
cleaned out trailer support leg and refreshed with all new grease.

Trailer was in great shape really. No rust or damage anywhere. (Besides busted tail light).
Dirty and neglected. Nothing new parts and TLC couldn't fix.

Trailer tows and stops like a dream and sure gets attention.

I have new military clearance lights I will be installing. That's another day though.


Now to fine another one..............
