M1061A1 5 ton trailer questions

I recently learned of this trailer model while doing some surfing. It isn't in the Std Catalog, but I did find the manual for it on logsa.

Anyone have a swag at what their value is? I think this would be a nice heavy duty - general purpose trailer.

The one that I have is a M1061. It is configured a little differently then some others in that it only has the single drawbar instead of having the second one for use when towing with a tracked vehicle.

One of these days, I’ll get around to putting some nicer photos up that will show how it currently looks with ramps, etc, but until then, you can get an idea by seeing what it looked like the day it was delivered by looking at the photos located at:

Note: Lunette height is adjustable.
The dataplate has the same ratings for Cross-Country as it does for Highway. Not sure why this it so as every other Military trailer I have seen with a rating less then 10 tons has a higher Highway rating than for Cross Country. I have had a mid-fifties CAT D4 on this trailer without problems, but the trip was a slow one and was on gravel and pavement...

I originally purchased this trailer for hauling my M37 behind my M35A2C, and it does that well although it is slow going up hills... I now have a M817 five ton dump to pull it with (and it gets loaded with a XM708 dump so all is good... )

do these have the same basic frame/running gear as the 796 bolster trailers?

if so, does anyone know if the bolser trailer's rating(4 tons) is the same on/off road?

N3UKA has one for sale. It is mint. I've seen it up close. I am not sure what he wants...PM him. It was a former laundry trailer unit, but all of the laundry equipment has been removed...except the framework for the top, which is also included.

He wants $1500. Offered to sell it to me, and I'm interested, but a little cash strapped right now. If someone else wants it, it would make a great camping trailer or a hauler for your Jeep...

I was wondering why my ears were burning. Yes, I have one for sale. I had 2 people that committed to buy it but both backed out after failing to attain transport for it. I lost use of the property it was being stored on so must sell it sometime in the near future. maddawg308 had mentioned he would like it but I see he is being very generous to open this up to someone that might be able to purchase quicker.

Just so you buyers are aware, these trailers are very heavy. Also, because of the short tongue to axle distance, they can fish tail on you. Cabell's trailer is a variant of the M1061 in that it had a lowered deck height with wheel wells. This makes it nice for hauling a vehicle. Also, these trailers are only 14' long. For such a short trailer, it is extremely heavy. I would consider something else before getting one.

By the way, I sold Cabell his trailer a couple years ago. I picked up two of these in Nevada for $1500 each. The other one went to a Unimog owner in San Diego. He said the suspension was way too stiff and the trailer would jerk the truck around if he hauled it empty. My guess is that most of these trailers are used to haul ammo based on the heavy springs and axles.

Just my 2 cents.

In the Army we put 2 fuel or water pods on them to resupply the TPU's for retail resupply. They also carry ROWPU's... They are made for carrying HEAVY stuff...

I had thought about getting one of these trailers to pull behind my deuce(when I had one) for my rock crawler truck.

The trailer empty weighs 5,000lbs, add 10,000 to that and you would be going very slow down the road with a deuce.

I would use a 5 ton or bigger truck to pull something like this load.

Thanks for mentioning this Mike... You're right, I'm still looking for a spare (kinda hate pulling the trailer any kind of distance without one...).

Is the tire/wheel the same as the one fitted to a M796A1 by any chance??

I think the bolster trailer tires are different. Looking at some photos of the bolster, they look narrower and taller. Correct me if I am wrong but the M1061 has 12x16 tires?

What's the difference between one of these and a M796? I know the 796 has a 4 ton rating vs. the 1061, but is it lighter or heavier?

Still thinking vs. the 332. :)

I have one of these I tow with a M543a2. I LOVE IT !!
Just wish I could get the extra tongue that slide into the thing. Any one know where I can get one?

I have used this for pallets of stone, logs, cars, poles. Even had a snow blower on it.
Here is the snow blower. Now I cant seem to find them together. MM

M106 Trailer

M106 Question:

I purchased a M106 recently. I have to travel about 500 miles to pick it up. I plan on using a 3/4 ton pick up truck.
Because the unit has Air / over Hyd. brakes do I need to have air in the system to tow it or will the wheels spin freely? I already have the rear lighting figured out ( using magnificent towing light strip).

When I return home with the unit I plan on converting to Electric / over Hyd.
