I found a dump truck forsale and they are claiming it has a 55,000 GVW. Im calling bunk on it. Its a 2.5 ton truck still. Is it or not?

Yeah, that's too high for a 5-ton dump, much less a M215. Try more like 24,000, give or take. If the data plate is on the dash, it will tell you.

Hes still claiming because its the dump version its 55,000. But its a 2.5 ton drivetrain so its standard 2.5 ton drive train.

I don't have the TM for the M215 handy, but you are right: It's a 2.5-ton frame/drivetrain. Max on-road load is 10,000lbs. This guy is roughly 40,000lbs over the weight of the truck! A 20-ton dump truck is a big truck!

2.5 cubic yards of steel

With a 2.5 cubic yard capacity and 27 cubic feet / cubic yard and steel weighs about 490 lbs / cubic feet then if you filled the entire M215 dump bed with solid steel you get:

(2.5) x (27) x (490) = 33,075 lbs :!:

Still a lot less than 55,000 lbs !!
