M35-A3 Tach Problem

Just got my A3 a couple of weeks ago and I was quite happy to find SS, until then I thought I was the only nut wanting to own and drive a MV around......

Anyhow, I have a tach problem I hoped you guys could help me with it.
As you probably know the A3 is electrical, when I crank the truck up the needle bounces a couple of times. Once engine starts the needle stays at zero.

When I kill the engine I get a needle bounce as well. What do you think, dead tach?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Derick ,
Welcome here. Nice to see your not too far away. I have had a couple A3's and my very first tach went out on the way home.
I was told the A3's have a magnetic tach thats a Cat part. I think the threads on SS somewhere about mine. And I also heard its a Pricey part to fix unllike the A2's or old trucks. I never really botherd replacing mine but I did find what a couple guys told me to look for.
Do you ever get over to the eastern part of NC, like Wilson , Kenly , Raleigh area with your truck? Id be happy to look at it for you. , Jay

I still have a tach problem on my A3. I bought a new tach but could not get it working with the magnetic pickup. A very slight adjustment pegged it, back it off just a little and it dies. Hour meter not working on the new one either. The new one goes to 3500, the stock one to 3000. There are plenty of the 3500 ones on ebay and elsewhere, I am not sure what my issue is.

The magnetic pickup is accessed thru the firewall. You can get to it outside but it is harder. It apparently is not a Cat part, they looked at it and laughed. Two wires. My pickup must work, just not sure what to do next.

Thanks guys for the input, I will investigate the magnetic pickup and see what I find. It is not real critical to get it working, but it sure would be nice to see the hours I run it and keep an eye on rpm's while driving etc.[thumbzup]

or you could just replace the gauge and magnetic pickup with a new Stewart-Warner setup and avoid the Cat stuff altogether.

Ask Cat about the tranny in a M916 and see what they do also about their own parts.

The Stewart-Warner ideas good. Keep your A3 around 52mph and you wont hurt it for now. ,Jay
