M35A2 Registarion in Connecticut

There were a couple of posts on here that got me going in the right direction. Thank You everyone. I just wanted to explain what I just went through registering my deuce in Connecticut. Surprisingly, it went very well.
I purchased my deuce from out of state. (Thank you George) As for what DMV requires:
1. Bill of Sale
2. Proof of insurance
3. If purchased from out of state, a serial number verification.

To make things the easiest for you, just go straight to Wethersfield.
1. Have the registration form all filled out. You can get the forms from any local police department. On the registration form, make sure that where it asks if its for commercial use, check "NO". Fill in the number of axles and the lightweight of the vehicle. Also where it says gross weight, put in the weight with the 2-1/2 ton offroad weight.
2. Also go to DMVs website and download the "Early American" plates form. Have that with you when you go to DMV and make sure you state to them that you are registering the truck as an "Early American"
3. If your truck is from out of state, you will need to have a serial number verification. DMV will issue you a commercial temp plate to bring the truck to Wethersfield to have the serial number verified. If thats the case, make sure you get a the paperwork from them that has "VIN Verification" checked on it. You will need that to hand to the inspector.
4. When you go to get the serial number verified, just make sure you present that form and re-iterate to the inspector that you are registering the truck as an "Early American" and need the serial number verified.
5. They will check the frame above the left front tire and the dash plate. If all is good, they will give you the form verifying the serial number.
6. Fill out a new registration form just like you did the first one, and have the "Early American" form filled out. Now just go back to the main office and get your "Early American" plates.

It takes a couple of hours, but if you go in prepared, it will go very easy for you....

when you went to wethersfield, did they perform any safety inspections or did they simply check the vin number? I know they varify the vin in three spots, i only have the tag inside the cab. I have an M817 5 ton dump USMC, the inspector in Waterbury said to go to wethersfield, and stated he wasn't sure if it is road worthy; would you have any feedback on that?

I was at DMV for 7 hours Tues trying to get plates for my M37. I had to go thru VIN verification as the truck was titled, but from out of state. The Inspector did check other things, he was complaining that my tires didn't have a DOT stamp on them. He only looked at the data plate on the glove box, did not check the frame. He seemed to be looking all around but didn't ask me to turn on lights or anything else. With a M817 I would only show up for VIN verification if it were totally road legal, don't give them the chance to fine you and don't give the hobby of MV collecting a bad name.

When i went for the deuce, they just checked the serial number on dashplate and fraim rail. They did not do any safety inspection. As for being road worthy, i would go through the truck with a fine tooth comb. Its great to see more MVs on the road, but police your equipment so they don't....

ok, sounds good...the only problem i have is the turn signals, I can't get any power at the switch. I was thinking of bypassing it and sending power straight to the lights through a flasher and toggle switch. I looked at the tm and the wiring diagrams, does the control box have breakers or fuses inside? How do I get into it? any help would be great

I have an A3, and am having a problem at my insurance company. They are telling me that it must have a commercial policy, around $1000 per year. Classic is also a possiblitly, as it is considered collectible. That is another whole hoop, pictures, mandatory garaging, periodic evaluations. Come on Really? I want to have plates full time, pay my taxes for local purposes. I am part of the solution. Now they say its not possible to have a regular policy for it. Must be commercial. Not sure if its their unfamiliarity on the MV's, or maybe just poor customer service? Does any one have the story on this, the CT DMV website regs are not clear, at least in my opinion. Anyone have an A3 registered on a personal ins policy, I do not qualify for "Antique" Catagory, not really interested in that, not wanting to be restricted in its use.

I think you are providing your insurance agent with too much information they don't understand. You have a pick-up truck. To get a commercial plate you need to have a federal annual inspection done, at your local mechanic, if its over 14000 light weight, and a vin verification if it has never beed registered in CT before. The only difference between a commercial plate and an antique plate is there can be no more than 500lbs in the bed. This most importan thing to keep in the back of your head is no one knows how to deal with these vehicles, but they are on the roads legally.

Be careful misrepresenting the truck. If you get into a wreck they may refuse to pay because you lied about what kind of vehicle it is.

Thanks for the reply's. I didnt try to hide anything from them. I was up front from the start. I wrote auto insurance for a few years in mass, my dad has been an agent for 20 years now and frowned on my decision to buy it. So everything else he said was negative. I am waiting on gulfway now.

All was well until I approached the Counter at the DMV, he asked what I wanted to do and I told him straight up I need to register my MV M35A3. His eyes rolled and a strange look came to his face. I asked why he was looking at me funny, he just snickered and said " let me see the paper work", went right to the GWVR rate 19400 and said what is your DOT #?

What another hoop? oh well trip for not. Back to work and on the Comp to DOT website, start the process, and the website shuts down. No DOT#, No Plates, Have insurance "our Hero's down south", have duece. So ill be trying to get that # and attempt again

CT DMV Says need a DOT#. When does it end, are there any people that work for the state that actually understand what not for hire personal use means? The statue states " for Intra or Inter state Commerce. What part of personal use is invisible to these people? Anyone else have the DOT # issue? I got someone working on the DOT#, but is it really neccessary?

Well, Finally I got in touch with the right person, Lt. Don Bridge CT DOT Safety Supervisor. Informed me that Putnam DMV was incorrect. No DOT was needed, they have written an exclusion for weight and DOT requirements, as early american classification is 20 and we are 19, Title assignment says 1993 but I see 1997 on everything, axels included(thank God for Type Errors), they provided commercial plates with the DOT inactive and excluded. They did require the safety inspection and vin verification,one thing they did I was un aware of was measure open space from tailgate to mud flaps to check on a Tailgate saftey bar, you see them on the back of semi trailers, 32" max i came in at 28.5. I guess they had a 5 ton or a 929 the day before that came through for safety and it failed due to that. So after all the hoops and traveling around and endless hours on the phone we are legal with plates. It ended up being pretty expensive as they charge on GVWR of 19500 Total with plates tax and fees was almost $750.00 plus the $150.00 in DOT charges. But I am glad its over now.
