Hi All:

Recently my engine has developed a random problem.

It can be idling normally at normal temp and then drop RPMs and start chugging and puffing grey smoke. Revving the engine will not make it go away. After a bit it resolves itself.

I have dropped and cleaned out the tank. replaced the primary filter twice (not bad the second time) and the secondaries have less than 150 miles on them. I am burning straight, fresh diesel #2 and I add a small amount of fuel lubricant when I gas up.

I did spend some time searching but did not find this problem previously mentioned.

Home fix or send the pump out for rebuild? Or possibly a defective injector?

Thanks for any pointers/advice.

Sounds like and injector issue.
If you run her at speed on the road for say 50 miles, does that seem to make it better for a while?
Multi-fuel engines like to be run. I am sure someone on here has the PM article on doing this as a first step diagnosis.

Mine would try to shut down after a long run, it would stumble and idle rough as you describe. I changed the filters too with no change. It got so the truck would die as soon as you let off the throttle after driving for a bit. Then it got so it wouldn't start until I held it wide open. All of this slowly progressed over a few months. I eventually changed the hydraulic head. Now it runs as good as a multi fuel can run. Which in my opinion is pretty darn good.
