On the drivers side of the cat 3116 motor there appears to be a spot for a spin on filter and there is not one there. All of the 3116 engines I have seen its the same set up anybody know what this is?

3116 Cat Filter Mounting

The 3116 Cat engine was available in many configurations and installed in many variable applications. Including truck, industrial and marine installations.

The crankcase breather on the base 3116 engine models is part of an assembly mounted high on the left side at the center line of the engine. The final spin-on fuel filter is installed on the lower side of the same assembly on many different installations.

There was an option in the price list that deleted the filter from this location when it was to be mounted in another remote location. The mounting and creakcase breather stays in the same place and but has a cap over the unused threaded fuel filter stud.

The 3116 engine in the M35A3 trucks has the final fuel filter in another location. Nothing is missing, it just looks like it.

The fuel filter on the M35A3 is a combination spin on filter and water seperator assembly mounted at the left rear corner of the engine bay.

Also, Cat engineers and the Army did not want maintenance people prefilling the fuel filter canister when changing spin on filters. That is a No No. Contaminated fuel (dirt) can get into the filtered side of the filter. All the Cat books for many years tell you that. Never fill the filter!

The unit fuel injectors will not tolerate contamination.

The remote filter is installed threads down on the M35A3, which means it must be installed dry to prevent contamination. You have to crank the engine to prime the system.

Clever huh!
