m38a1 60s gearing

I was told by an old jeep mechanic that the last usmc batch that kaiser produced had a higher gearing than past models and hence did not need an overdrive. I have done alot of research and the only documented difference i can find is the posi track. Does anyone know if they did have a diferent gearing ?

Not too sure on this. The M38A1's came with 5.38:1 gears w/ a Borg-Warner T-90 and Spicer 18 transfer case. Front axles were Dana 25/27 and the rear was a Dana 44.

I'm almost sure that in the later 60's they came with DANA 27/44 axles and the diff. ratio was 4.27:1

They may have. I'm just going off of what my A1 has and its an 8/52 A1.

I never heard of that both the Military M38A1 and the Civilian CJ-5 with the 134CI OHV had 5:38 gears, they did have 3.73 and 4.11's as an option in the CJ-5's later on but that was when they started to use the V-6's as an option..
