M923 Recovery Questions

Crew,

I'm heading to Minot to recover a M923 (my EUC cleared today) and have a few recovery questions. I currently have a M35A2 (and others) and understand the CDL and air brake issues (thank you Steel Solders!!). Here are the Q's:

1) I've read all (most?) the threads surrounding the four batteries and the thing that is not crystal clear is the 12V tap off one of the batteries. I want to use my two fresh deuce batteries to get home. I assume I can just transfer over the 12V tap, delete two of the batts and should be ok as I figure a summer start should be ok on two batts. Reasonable?

2) Are the lug nuts and cap nuts on the M35A2 and M923 the same? If I've used the TM's correctly, they should be. Can someone confirm? Then I'll be set with lug wrenches and all that.

3) The trans fluid is a bit of a mystery. If I'm reading the LO and threads correctly, it *should* have OE10 in it. The reason I ask is that I want to take some fluids for top offs. The question is *if* it has DEXIII or TES-295 (unlikely) in it, will adding OE10 for top offs be ok for a 500 mile drive? Meaning is mixing ok? I'll flush it when I get home. I was just going to bring OE10 and add that. Advise?

4) Are folks finding that the brake release bolts are intact on most recoveries? I don't want to buy 6 for nothing if 99 times out of 100 they are there. I believe I saw the part number in a thread.

5) Are folks finding that the fan override lockup bolts are usually intact? The recovery is in July so I want to make sure they are there. Are the bolts anything special? I could bring a spare set but the TM 24P is ambiguous. Anyone have the right part number?

Thank you,
Allen

You should send me a PM if you need assitance, I can even pull the lot for you, or at least let you know what you need.

You should also get in touch with Dueceman51 he's in Scotland but works in Brookings, and is very MV savy.

1)You don't need the 12 volt tap to run the truck. i run mine atm off two cheap walmart specials just to move around the lot.

3)You are more than welcome to drain your tranny at my place and fill her up with whatever fluid you want. I wouldn't want to mix the two, but I doubt there is harm, it's just outside my scope.

2,4,5) I can't answer atm

For the record all the trucks at Minot drove to the lot, I watched them process.

To answer my own questions:
1) The +12V tap on the batteries is for the low speed on the heater - not needed for a recovery.
2) Yes, they are the same.
3) Bighurt, thanks for the offer. Turns out I used W10-20 transmission/hydraulic oil that met the Mil standard for the OE 10W. I added 1 quart to get home and all is fine.
4) I was missing some brake release bolts and there are only 4, not 6 (duh). They were in stock at Napa for about $4.
5) The fan lockup bolts were there and they look to be something special and I would not use a regular hex bolt.

Maybe this information will someone down the road.
