I noticed a gear shift problem early on with my M929 being slow to go into reverse. It felt like the selector was not going all the way into the reverse position. I discovered that one of the 4 screws that go into the side of the shift tower right below the plastic bezel was too long. Shortening the screw about .25" allowed the gear selector to go fully into reverse.
I had the same problem with my M915A1. The shift tower is similar to the M939 series, but not the same. It had the same problem with one screw being too long and preventing the gear selector from going all the way into reverse. The long screw on the M915A1 was the one on the right side of the shift tower at about the 5 o'clock position.
I thought it was strange to have the same problem in two different vehicle series. I guess both being AM General vehicles could explain it. Or the wrong screws being used during installation.
