Has anyone used the Katz magnetic block heater with any luck? Its and oil pan heater. It seems to get pretty hot so I am a little concerned.

A couple of things, "pretty hot" is a relative term, 150 to 175°F is not a problem and use it only for 1/2 hour to an hour, so that you don't build up condensation from any water present, which could cause corrosive problems throughout the engine in the long run.

Also don't forget, they get hot if just sitting out, but if they are up against the cold metal pan. And assuming cold air around the motor, then heater will only get so warm.
But if it gets that warm when it's on the pan, then Bjorn has a good point on limiting the time you run it.
