That is some quality aeronautical engineering by the Piper Aircraft Co. of Lockhaven, PA. Given the, uh, open and airy nature of cub flight, it's obvious that the ME109 ground crew had neglected to put any golden BBs in the loadout. Sgt Stegall was a very lucky man that day.

I suspect the 109 driver pulled up alongside just to find out why the cub hadn't blown up/burst into flames/come apart after the pasting he gave it.
