Starke County Indiana has a population of under 25,000. But our VFW in Knox Indiana works very hard to remind everyone what Memorial Day is all about.
Veterans, current military, firefighters, & police officers will stand guard for a 24 hour vigil. There will be a POW-MIA candlelight service.
We speak to the public at the county courthouse, then proceed to the cemetary for a remembrance ceremony.
This year, we will also be going to the fire station to dedicate the "Fallen Firefighters Memorial". The Red Knights (firefighters) motorcycle club will have their annual ride to the area firehouses again this year.
A real attraction is our military vehicle collection, which is growing steadily.
The National Guard usually brings at least 1 HUMVEE, & some other vehicle.
One guy brings a complete WWII Jeep. Then we have a totally restored 1942 Dodge Command car, a 1942 Cletrac bomber tug, a restored 1943 WC12 truck, a restored CCKW truck, a 1952 Reo/Studebaker M35, & a 1970 M35A2 with an M332 ammo trailer.
Currently under repair or restoration are a Half-Track & a Mighty Mite.
This year's program starts at noon Sunday May 28th, & concludes about 2PM on Monday the 29th.
All veterans & their families are invited. Food will be available to you at no charge. Public is invited, but a donation is requested. Drinks will be available too, of course.
It's a nice opportunity to meet & thank our WWII veterans, & welcome home our youngest members.
If you want to bring a Military vehicle that would be GREAT. We have plenty of room. There is room for camping, & a decent motel nearby.
Most of us don't get around to sleeping much though.
Out in the public view, it is very subdued. But inside the Post at o-dark-thirty, it's a party.
Join us if you can.
Remember "Every day is Memorial Day to a Veteran"
We stand in honor of those who can't.
