MEP-002a battery draining?

What would cause the battery on a MEP-002a to drain over the course of a few weeks? (I normally keep mine on a battery maintainer, but somehow it managed to get unplugged and when I went to test run the generator the batteries were so low it would not start)

thanks Ike

Shorted capacitor at the charging VR. Or possibly that and a potentially bad DC VR.

I thought I read in one of the manuals that after a particular date, the battery drain was corrected so you didn't have to disconnect the battery if the generator is not going to be run for a while, but I can't find it now. I may be mixing things up with something else. (?) Anyway, I just checked my MEP-003A, and my Fluke 87 shows zero current flowing with the battery connected and everything off. My regulator board is 72-5338.
