Looking through the manual, it says that when you preheat, it energizes the glow plugs and heating elements. Where are/ what purpose does the 'heating elements' serve? The wiring diagram shows that the glow plugs and the heating elements are two different things.

The glow plugs are pretty self explanatory, they are mounted in the head of the engine to help to heat up the cylinders. The heating elements are located in the intake manifold pipe to heat up the incoming air a bit. Since diesel engines do not use a spark to ignite the fuel but rather use heat and compression the more heat the better when starting.
