MEP 701A help needed!! DC Control Circuit Breaker popping

I just won a MEP 701A 3 kw diesel generator with a lil over 500 hours and just fired it up.
It has a dead battery so I jumped it with my Deuce. It started right up
and ran for about 5 minutes. Blew some dark smoke out of one exhaust
a couple times and then popped the DC Control Circuit breaker.

I went to start it again and every time it starts it pops it again and shuts off.

What's going on?

Is there an online source for manuals for this?

any help greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Google "MEP016B manual" the 701a is a 016b with an ASK housing added. Note on mine some of the wiring does not exactly match the manuals.

Parts are always the problem with these units, try ebay, ask on here if anyone is parting out a unit, etc. As to the voltage regulator repair may be an option, also I think the same voltage regulator is used on an assortment of other MEP models, I am not sure of the details on which ones.
