MEP 803a Setup for 50Hz, 230V 3-Phase – European Users, Help Needed!

Hi everyone,

Are there any European users of the MEP 803a genset here? I’m hoping to get some advice on running it at 50Hz and 230V 3-phase, as we use here.

I’ve been able to adjust the frequency to around 55Hz and voltage to 215V using the knobs, but I’d really like to get it as close as possible to the standard 50Hz and 230V.

If anyone has successfully tuned it for European use or can share any tips, I’d greatly appreciate your help!

I've not done this so I can't comment on how well it will work. Since the machine wasn't released with this in mind, you'll need to do some modifications.

I recommend avoiding trying to get the voltage too high. The generator is wound for 208v, not 230v. Driving the voltage up over spec can have negative impacts to the exciter circuits. You increase the risk of damaging the rotor or voltage regulator.

Additionally, the engine makes less power at 1500 RPM vs 1800. You may not be able to put full 10kw load on it with good frequency control. If you are at the limit of your travel on the external speed adjustment, you will need to open the front cover and change the spring configuration on the internal parts of the governor.

In the TM section of the forum for the MEP803, there is a manual for the engine. Take a look at that and see if it gets you where you need to go in regards to getting the engine into the RPM range for your application.

A long, long time ago, We did what you are asking about. Abet, larger gen set, but yes, we ran a week and a half. a German building, on our 60 KW gen sets. It was a test, and it went well. The few volts and hertz difference did not matter at all. all equipment, including computers ran well.

215V should be within the generally acceptable range for EU voltages per the IEC, IIRC. (215/230=93%, which is within the -10%, +10% general specification. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEC_60038) )
55Hz, not so much, but unless you are trying to run analog clocks or certain motors, most items should be ok.
