MEP112 to 003 conversion - Lessons learned

I've been working on my second MEP 400 to 60Hz conversion. I've been scrounging parts as needed and have learned a couple of lessons along the way.

There are a couple of ways to do this. You have to swap the stator and rotor to start, the diode bridge, regulator, Hz meter and transducer, and the small inductor in the AC box. The 60hz units have a 120v service outlet which is handy. Swap the complete box if you have one available.

In my case I replaced the AC box with one off of a 60Hz MEP002 (5KW unit) I promptly overheated the T1 transformer and took out the diodes on the regulator. A call to Libby got me to a very knowledgeable and helpful man that shed this bit of information; The 002 has twice the wraps on the current transformers. This is why I damaged the other parts. I removed two wraps from the core on all three legs. This took some time as the wires had to be shortened, new lugs attached, and reconnected to the phase selector switch and the terminal board. The main breaker is the same.

This done and the damaged parts replaced, things came to life. Connecting to a load bank had all working well under load.

Hope this helps someone.
