I believe I see water leaking from the front gear cover on the right top side close to the water pump.

I do not think it is the water pump or seal. I can actually see a little weep from the gear cover to block and felt it with my finger after I wiped it down.

Are there water passages under the gear cover? Or am I seeking residue from elsewhere?

What am I am looking at to change it? Might I have another engine issue?

The water is coming from the water pump, nothing from/on/in the gear cover, not to hard to pull the water pump, when you install, use a NEW sealing ring and a LOT of anti-seize on EVERYTHING including the sealing ring, be careful when pulling the 6 pump bolts, most likely there was no anti-seize used, these bolts tend to rust in place, so it is very easy to break them in the block. be sure to have the coolant drained at least 4" below the water pump. If you replace the water pump, get one with a METAL impeller NOT a plastic impeller (these WILL break, crack, ect .)
