Long time lurker finally registered and first time poster..

I just bought a M35A2 at yesterday's Frankfort sale. It went for $1270 plus fees which I am happy about.. I am in Cookeville Tennessee which is app. 180 miles from Frankfort...Another forum member thinks he looked at this truck, (Lot number 6900), and said it was running with decent brakes. I think I am going to try a recovery.

I will be taking a local mechanic who served two tours in the 8th Infantry during Vietnam. He was a deuce mechanic along with tank recovery and APC vehicles... I just got in from his house where we looked at pics of him changing out a deuce motor in Vietnam...Really neat. This guy is an excelled mechanic and a really good guy.

Now to the questions. I have searched and searched the archives as to not be redundant, but I can't seem to find any answers to my specific questions about a few things.

Once my EUC clears and payment has been made, what happens during the SF97 process? Do they send it to me to fill out or do they fill it out themselves? My truck was listed as "Manufacturer Unknown" which is somewhat troubling to me... How will I, (or they), know what to put in the blanks for year and model? Who does this and when?

Also, when can I actually take delivery? Do I have to have the SF97 before I go to recover it or can I get the truck first and let them send the SF97 to me later?

If that's the case, what do I do about a temporary tag for the trip? I'm sure I can get an insurance binder.

Also, does Frankfort national Guard base/Boone allow me to drive these off base if they run? I tried to call the base from a number I googled today and a Lieutenant on duty had no idea what I was talking about or what trucks I was talking about... I also tried all day to contact my GL rep who never answered his phone. This forum is my only help at real information.

The mechanic I am taking has agreed to shut his business down for a day and go with me to Frankfort to help get this... I could see a little glimmer in his eye as he looked the pics of my truck over....I hate to drag him 180 miles away and then be in for a big letdown of some unknown paperwork or technical problem. I think he could cover any mechanical problem.. Being that this is my first recovery, I want to have all my bases covered from a understanding and paperwork point.

Again, I know most of you guys are way ahead of me on this, but I looked for hours for this specific information and couldn't find it.

If it's redundant and I have missed it and anyone doesn't wish to post it, please PM me the info or a link to it.

Congrats on the win. I got one there yesterday too. I have not picked up one from that base before, but you should be able to get it once your EUC clears. I have not gotten an SF-97 for any of mine, but I think that is kind of an afterthought.

I am going to take my gooseneck up just in case it doesn't run. It is also much faster to travel 70 than 55mph. I will be coming up from Chattanooga, TN.

Yes! As per the GL website, you can take delivery after the EUC clears and the invoice is paid. As far as the SF-97 that too is explained on the GL site but basically you will go to the forms menu on GL, bring up the form and complete it. The info is probably available from member Carnac here on the site, search for the 2009 VIN info thread. If he doesn't know, post up the VIN and a number of us can figure it out. Can't help with the temp tag info for your state.

Thanks Recovry4x4....It's a little tough to figure this out when you're as green as I am on this subject.

I spent hours reading old posts on here, so I think I am much more ready than I would have been otherwise.

Since the truck was listed as "Manufacturer Unknown", and I didn't inspect it, will GL even provide me with a VIN? I went to the GL site and read the SF97 procedures, but my question would be will GL even know what my VIN is before I go to get the truck? Will the VIN be on my invoice or will I have to try and fetch it from the truck myself after I get the vehicle home?

Is that my VIN number? If so, how can I see what year and make it is?

Once the EUC clears, you're only going to have a (roughly) 2-week period in which to schedule the pickup of the truck. You can go ahead and apply for the SF97, which will take awhile to get to you. Once you get it, you can use it to apply for the title with your DMV. You may or may not need a LEO to inspect the vehicle, my DMV has required it about 50% of the time.

So far as the manufacturer, if your auction listed the serial # of the truck, list it here, someone can probably figure out who built it. If not, you can go to Carnac's VIN thread and post it there and he can give you the lowdown. On the paperwork you will fill in the blanks before you give it to the DMV.

Like I said, the EUC will clear and then you have a limited amount of time to schedule a pickup, so you will have to do the SF97 when you get home. It's good to wait anyway as the auction may have had inaccuracies. You will have to get a temporary tag from your DMV for the recovery (if your state issues them-Ga doesn't). Insurance you HAVE to have. You don't need the SF97 or the title to recover the vehicle.

I'll bet the Lt. you got in touch with is still laughing about some dude calling up about his truck. The only person you need to be talking to is the GL rep. If he doesn't call you back, keep calling. He's the only one who can answer any questions.

Most bases allow you to drive off, but the GL rep needs to confirm that.

Go do a search for the "GL/DRMO pickup" list authored by maccus. It will be a big help.

First off, Congrats on your new truck and welcome to SS!
Keep calling the GL rep for that base, he will know if it can be driven out or not. I've never been to a base that wouldn't let you drive it out. Most GL sites are very helpful and will help you to a degree, like with a jump start. Best bet is to find someone here on SteelSoldiers that has been there and has first hand knowledge of how they operate.

Clinto, you gave a pretty good "flow chart" of how this usually works. When my EUC clears, I'll contact my county clerk and check on a Tennessee temporary tag, (if they issue it).

I don't know if that tells you anything VIN wise....From my searches on the site, it looks as if I may have a GL "DTID" number and a DRMO stock number. Can those be broken down into anything else?

With my truck not having a listed Manunfacturer or Year or VIN, my searches on the SS site indicate a possible depot rebuild with a new data plate installed...Is that good, bad or irrelevant?

The numbers on the truck in pictures #2 and 3 match the truck ID number on the auction ad. I would ignore pic #1.

Yes you can drive them off that base. I have picked up 8 trucks from that base. Each time they helped me start them, but never gave me any time to even open the hood. I had to check them after I got off. Mostly it's due to the gl employee being so impatient. If it won't start up, he will tell you to reschedule a wrecker in two weeks. The military guys are super at that base, more so than any of the other bases that I have been to. Mine all drove home except one. The brakes locked up & I had to tow it. One truck had fuel gel problems due the cold (near zero ) & shut down 7 times in 50 miles. One guy got one with a rod knocking, and another got one with zero brakes , and another got a blown head gasket while I was there. The trucks that were just auctioned are probably ok, they look like they were driven to the site & still had their tow hooks on the front bumpers, which is a good sign. It means that a tow bar wasn't used (unless someone took the time to reinstall the hooks).

I would add one recommendation to this thread. Don't bother with the SF-97, but rather pay GL to give you a real title. GL does not give you an SF-97 that is in your name, but rather they give you an SF-97 that lists GL as the new owner, and then they give you a notarized letter saying that they transferred the SF-97 to you, and you are the new owner. That is not a legal ownership document in Maryland, or in a number of other states. Maryland will only allow a transfer like that if GL is a MD auto dealer, and they are not.

As with Sevensteps I also will be a new owner of a M35A2 from the same auction in KY. The info I have got so far from this site has been great. His questions have been the same for me, so I have benefited from all the advice in this thread. My recovery will be a little more involved as I live in Northern Michigan. I have a gooseneck trailer and adequate truck to bring it back with me. I have applied for the EUC and will have to wait until approval. I am still unsure on title, but have time to nail that down.
