I'm new to the cucv's I recently bought a m1028 from a friend and it won't start. But when it was running he had to start it with ether. He had let it sit for probly 3 months and tried to start it and it would not run. So he replaced the mec. fuel pump. He tried to start it and it wouldnt. He did not bleed the air out of the lines when he replaced it. Also what is a dog head relay? Like I said I'm new to this so any help would be appriciated.

Using ether to start is not good.
Suggestion- search the forum for 'won't start' threads & proceed methodically.
Yeah I always say that and then there are a few that will post it is OK if you do it correctly. That just makes me more not want to use ether if one has to be careful.

If you truck cranks but does not start it is one of the following most likely. My guess if you replaced the fuel pump air in the lines, did you also replace the fuel filter? It is the same one you get at the auto parts store for a same year 6.2L diesel. I can ensure you that air in the lines will cause it to not start, been there done that and spent more then I needed because of it.

Bad glow plugs.
Bad glow plug system, but good plugs.
Fuel delivery, filter clogged or air in lines.
The worst, injector pump bad.

I would start by reading the tech manuals and searching posts here and read for a few days to learn how the system works. If you are lucky there may be a local member that can help. I have offered for my local Fort Worth members, but they usually have always found what they needed searching topics here.

Welcome to the Forum from Alabama!

In addition to what K9 mentioned I would add the following. Be sure to check out the below website for the TMs (Tech. Manuals). These are very good service manuals that will assist in just about any situation. In all honesty, I have enjoyed reading them in my free time even with no current issues on the 1008. Do not let the 24/12V electrical system scare you!

Welcome to SteelSoldiers.

Make sure you visit the Cucv Wiki - Steel Soldiers::Military Vehicles Supersite (CUCV Wiki) that is at the top of the page on the CUCV Forum.

All of the CUCV Technical Manuals are listed and many other helpful bits of information.

You need to download the repair manuals. You can get then for free. A couple of our members have posted them on their websites.

www.jatonkam35s.com
www.liberatedmanuals.com

The wiring diagrams are in the appendix of the -20 and -34 manuals.
Also checkout the CUCV stickys. It is where we try to post helpful tips and tricks.

Almost every question you will have has been asked and answered many times. The advanced search will become your best friend. Please don't hesitate to ask something that you can't find.

Read the TM 9-2320-289-10 Operators Manual to find out how a stock system should work. It is simular to the Operators Manual for Civilian vehicles. It tells you where all the lighs, switches, etc are located and what they do.

Three of the most important tools you can buy are:

Digital Voltmeter and know how to use it - ~$10 and up
12v Battery Charger - ~$50 for a decent one
Battery Load Tester - ~$30 for an okay one at Harbor Freight
