Noise problem

So I'm driving down the road and I get this thrRUUUMMMmmmmm.......thrRUUUMMMmmmmmm... vibration problem. I knock it out of gear and coast down the next hill. It doesn't go away. I shift back into 5th and it's gone until I have to get back on the accelerator.
I stop at the house and see 80W90 spray on the left rear wheel. Not heavy, but noticeable. The bolts on the bearing housing were loose so I retightened them. Now it's spraying worse. Am I losing the bearings in the rear axle?:shock:
I will pop the plug on the diff tonight to check the gear oil level.

Probably just the seal in the keyway is bad, Which has now washed the grease out of the bearings, Repack the bearings and seal the keyway before you go to far with it!

The bearings have no clue when you are on the "go" peddle or not, they support the weight of the truck. If it is a problem that is pronounced under acceleration, I would check the drive line bolts. It is a known issue that they come loose. The gear oil is a different issue.

I'll check them this weekend.
For some reason it reminds me of a broken motor mount problem I had in a Dodge Polara (65), so drive line makes sense to me.
Hopefully I can get away with parking the Deuce at my house for a day's work. It would be hard for anyone to contact the Zoning office when it's closed for the weekend.

If you check the PS magazines in the reference section, you will see one about broken motor mount bolts and all of the problems they cause. Apparently it was a common problem until they switched over to Grade 8 bolts.

Check and tighten all bolts, Grease all Zerk's and U joints. Theres some in the drive shafts too.
Repair leak in rear axle Easy fix. Check oil in trans, transfer case, diffs flush and change if nasty. Check front axle for leaks in inner seal and grease front king pins. Clean pressure valves in axles, If stuck will cause leaks and have fun:wink:

Where can you get key way seal?I read it was made of cork.
Any auto parts store. Buy a small roll of cork/rubber gasket material that is the correct thickness, and cut out a wedge with a sharp knife. Dip it in a little silicone sealant to fill any gaps.
