...was there ever an M series number for this type of Dodge Ambulance? Or was it just a stateside build...

I don't think they had an M number. There is one really nice unrestored one here local that still wears it's Air Force blue and markings but it's horribly faded. Those models tend to be the "ugly duckling" of Dodge trucks but still well built and awesome through and through,
