We went up to the very top of the mountain where the old radar site was. Met a Windrock guy that was born in 1948 and grew up around there. He says up until 1958, the only way to get up there was a 28 minute cable tram ride up from the bottom of the mountain. It was used to monitor in case of Soviet planes flying in toward the Oak Ridge nuclear facilities. In 1958 they cut a road to the top and it was paved all the way up, and used until the site was shut down in the late 60's. Now there are several unattended commercial data towers and homeland security antennas still up there operating. The only original buildings still standing are the original machine gun guard post, and the old recreational building we parked in front of.
