Old girl put back on active duty

Before I start this discussion I have to put my disclaimer in. The following took place at the express written permission of my company commander and my battalion commander.

Three weeks ago my National Guard unit began preparations for our annual training at Fort Bragg NC. Due to several equipment failures my company was extremely short on equipment. My commander knew that I have my Deuce and a half and my MEP-003A, and asked if I would be willing to bring them to support our company during our training. He expressed to me that the unit would accept responsibility for the equipment and maintain it, fuel it, and I would be the only operator of it.

Well the day came and I provided a MEP-003A on a M116A2 trailer, and my M35A2 pulling the M105A2. We are a Mechanized Infantry Company, and I was responsible for hauling all of the BII for the M2 Bradleys, and all of the company's ruck sacks, and A-bags. Needless to say the truck and trailer were pack from front to back and top to bottom......She was heavy. We made the 30 mile trip to the ranges of Ft. Bragg and set up our AA. She hauled all of the gear with no problems, and seemed to run a little happier once she hit the dirt roads and trails. Once at our AA at DZ Normandy, we set up camp and began training. The deuce was used everyday hauling troops, equipment, and supporting the live fire ranges. When we picked up our Bradleys from the motor pool, I was following behind on the tank trails hauling the BII and other equipment. THAT was probably the most fun I have had in my deuce since I have had it.....The tank trails were AWESOME!!!!!

The MEP, was set up at out AA and was started and provided electricity for 5 total tents including our company CP. The generator ran non stop except for a scheduled shutdown every second day to check oil and fuel filters. The MEP ran without ANY issues and ran at around 3/4 to 1 gallon an hour. I should mention that both the MEP and Deuce ran on JP-8 the entire three weeks.

I could not have been any happier seeing the old girls doing their thing one more time, and they seemed to be happy being back working. The only issue I had was a flat inside dual on the Deuce, but we made a training exercise for some of the new privates on vehicle maintenance, and providing security if your vehicle goes down.

All in all it was an awesome experience and I could not have been happier to support my company when it was needed. I was even awarded an AAM for the support. Before I left to come home my commander made sure that the generator and the deuce were full of JP-8 for the trip.

I hear you PB.

I rember one time at Ft Hood we were having a change of command inventory. We had alot more "stuff" than was on our MTOE. So all the extar went in the back of my pickup and boy was it loaded. Then we/I hid the truck and stuff. So when the old CO and new CO came to do the inventory, the old CO about ****, he demanded to know were all the extar "stuff" was. My platoon SGT just said what "stuff". After they were gone the plt sgt told me to get the "stuff". I said what stuff, it didn't work for me though, I had to bring it back:cry:

That's awesome-you have something that 99.9% of MV owners don't: The experience of having your own MV used with an active military unit. That's just plain awesome.

Most of us don't even know where our trucks served-you were there with it!

Very cool you got to use your personal MV for unit training, however PBs comment was spot on. I can't imagine that it would have been necessary had unit leadership exercised all the systems in place to ensure US military equipment was properly maintained. Budget cuts... Etc, etc, etc- got it. But unless your state has implemented some extraordinarily drastic measures that the Army hasn't directed your unit should not have been logistically challenged enough to call in personal rolling stock to complete the mission. IMO this does not represent the state of the US Army or the DoD.

I heard similar the other month from a guy I was talking to when I drove the Deuce to Lowes. He stated he missed the old trucks because they were so much more reliable. He said after some of the heavy rains we had they didn't have enough "running" modern trucks on their base to deploy and that they were going around to all the old girls that were sitting ready for disposition to see what started. They ended up using more of the old then the new.....

The deuce and 800 series 5 tons were a classic case of Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS). I have driven both back to the motor pool with dead batteries, bad brakes (low range with escort vehicle), engine knocking like a bill collector, and otherwise battered and bruised. The new series of vehicles are a classic case of over engineering, bowing to the EPA and other politically correct doctrine and the greed of the military industrial complex. Before I left active duty I saw classified videos of vehicles being blown in place because they broke down on the battlefield and could not be recovered quickly. Your tax dollars at work.

I saw your deuce driving down long street just past the gate onto base. I was one of the guys looking like a sack of s#@$ in kit on your right side. Just got done doing land nav for EIB when you drove by. Never seen a deuce on post still in action and didn't recognize your bumper ID so now I know why. I've thought of using mine cause we don't have an LMTV only a bunch of 1197s, but I'm sure if I drove her into the motor pool the gate guard would never let me out till I had a dispatch. :whistle:

I remember seeing you guys out doing the land nav course. I thought to myself, "it sure sucks to be them". It was HOT that day

First, that is just awesome that you got that opportunity. I imagine some of the older guys who saw it out on the range gave more than a double take.

Second, your Company Commander and XO should have their asses in a sling. That is just inexcusable. Unless they have honestly been denied parts or repairs for months, the situation is a perfect demonstration of the breakdown in basic unit logistics functions. If they didn't have enough functional M16s, what was their plan? have guys bring their own ARs with them? Oh, wait, can't fight without a weapon, guess we need to PMCS them. Well guess what, trucks need it too!

Sorry, my branch is showing, I'll just go back to checking motorpools.
