I know you sick guys were hoping it would be pics of carnage but they are not. I took my two winches apart today to check them out before install. I decided on which one to go with and took it apart. The only stuff I need area a drum lock and seals. I already have the lock and lever but can anyone that has checked recently tell me who has a good price on the seals? The brake assembly was rust stuck and this was why the worm gear would not budge. I had to clean up the rust and the cover has some large pits. I will have to use silicone to help fill the pits. At least it just has to keep out water not keep anything in. I hope to get it back together and in next weekend.

It was pretty obvious the drum and case seals were leaking since the drum brake pad was soaked with GO and there was old GO on the inside of the drum where it should have been dry. The worm gear seals were not leaking but might as well replace them before reassembly. All the bearings and bushings were in great shape. The way the drum was wrapped it was pretty obvious that at least the last owner took car of it. There is still a good coating of grease on the wire robe. I plan to spool out the cable and clean it up and get her resoaked with go.

OD Iron has the best price that I've found. Last winch I rebuilt I crossed all the seals at NAPA and they were twice the price of OD Iron.

I have checked OD IRON. I am going to check with my local parts store tomorrow. I did find the seals online for about $20 cheaper that OD iron without the selector shaft seal but I am hoping to have the stuff in hand by Saturday night.

Let me know what you come up with. I've got another winch to rebuild.

Of the 2 whinch I've taken apart , 1 was missing a bolt or plug or some thing in the brake houseing and the brake was in good shape. The other had this plug or bolt (can't rember what it was). The brake on that one was rusted bad. I'm going to leave it out when I put it back together. That way if any thing gets in there it can come back out.

So far my local parts store said they could have two of them for me tomorrow. I think they were the PTO side worm gear seal and the small PTO side drum seal. They found the big clutch side seal but were unsure as to how long it would take to get it. They also said they could not cross the brake side of the worm gear. They are supposed to check on the clutch side seal and get back to me. I told them if they could get it in less than 10 days to go ahead and get it. If they can't I will be ordering from OD iron. I will not have the money to pay until Friday and I do not have to put money down at my local parts store. At least if I have the PTO drum seal I can start putting it back together. I could actually get most of it back together with that one seal. So far the money is a wash any way I have looked at it. The cheaper source I found gave a ten day window before they even shipped. I guess I am not in to big a hurry but I hate having things apart like this. Things get lost and you forget how to reassemble it if you let it wait too long.
