possable charging issue?

Ok was driving down the road and volt gage dropped. And the bad electrical smell got worse. Started to check the fuse box. Than found a small black box that seems to be the bad smell. Isn't this for the glow plugs? And does this have anything to do with the charging system? Or is it something else? Because right now when the volts drop like they are I don't have blinkers or brake lights. The alternators are pulling 14.4 and 28.6 on the test I did. Can someone please help guide me in the right direction?

Just a thought... what was the last work done on the truck? Has the GP relay been replaced? If so, was it verified to have an isolated ground? If not, that has been known to burn up GP controllers and harm the charging system.

Which box was it that had the smell?

Center of the dash? Next to the fusebox? Next to the steering column? Size shape, etc.

A picture works the best.

You voltages are seem correct. 14.4v on GEN1 and 14.2v on GEN2.

At what point did you do the GP replacement (how long ago)?

That is the GP controller card. Sounds like your GP system is having a failure and cooked the card.

There are a couple of members that are selling new cards.

Make sure you use the TM to checkout the system before you install a new card.

There are instructions on what to check in the TM 9-2320-289-20 Electrical Troubleshooting section 2-15, page 2-62

Have you ever replaced the GP relay on the firewall? It could be stuck closed.
