All,

To keep this post clean, I've decided to restart it.

This is an 90 BMY M932a2

It is possible on a recent trip, that my fuel may have been "modified" by some less than good intentions from some people.

The quick and dirty of what has happened, and what has occurred since.

1) Filled the tank up to the chain in the tank. I used standard (apparently junk) #2 diesel while travelling through Nebraska. I have verified this by the receipt.
2) Drove the truck (which ran perfect and has been inspected by multiple parties) approximately 25 miles before it started to sound like the engine was knocking. I immediately pulled over to inspect.
3) No issues were present other than the sound of the engine. Not any noticeable loss in power.
4) It had been a long, nearly 800 mile drive up until that point. So, thinking that perhaps I was just tired and knitpicking about a noise, it was accepted that perhaps I just hadn't noticed the sound previously. So, I drove the remaining 200 miles without any issue (minus the sound)
5) The truck is still performing about as normal other than the noise, which I asure you, does not sound like other trucks I've heard

I did notice last night, that there appears to be more smoke than before. Again, maybe I just didn't notice in my excitement of the road trip. The engine has less than 5k on it (total).

The fix I am going to try

1) Drain tank, clean out with an approved method via the local trucking company.
2) Blow out all lines
3) Replace all fuel filters

Hopefully this will fix it. If not, I have a friend who is a big line diesel tech for a huge outfiit here in Denver. He will inspect the engine and all necessary items upon my return from Canada in a few weeks.

I sure can appreciate your concern on this one, sounds that dont belong especially concerning the engine are not good, let hope that you were tired and thing turn out good for you and your truck, your "fix" plan looks good I sure hope it cures any problems for both of you!
Good luck

Pull a sample of the fuel in the truck (off the bottom). If you know what good diesel looks and smells like, you should be able to tell right away if it's contaminated.

While you may have some bad fuel, it's not likely from the symptoms you describe.

I had a customer with a similar story on a Dodge cummins a while back. Turned out that the fuel truck for the station where he got fuel had mistakenly topped off the diesel tanks with unleaded. He did have a receipt for diesel and the station (or their insurance) ended up buying him a new engine. I agree with pulling a fuel sample from the bottom of the tank. Could be that you got some bad fuel.
More smoke often indicates a sticking injector however. Sometimes you can tell by hard accelerating to about 40mph, then let up completely while watching the tach. If the engine seems to "stick" at the higher rpm for a few seconds before coming down it could be burning off the access fuel from the stuck injector. If it is knocking all the time you can crack injector lines while it is running and see if the knock changes on one cylinder or another.
Let us know what you find out.

I had an engine knock on my Deuce. I isolated the bad injector by doing what bigbird1 sudgested. It wasnt until I started to pull the injector did I realize one of the bolts on the injector hold down had come loose. Allowing compression to bypass causing it to "knock"
