Pulling engine

Hey guys
How hard is it to pull the engine,And I cant find the manuel with engine removal in it I think I have
them all but beats me

Or would it be easier to work on the in the truck I dont know what it needs
yet maybe just a headgasket maybe A full rebuild, geting the crankshaft out with the engine
in the truck would be a pain?
and help would be great :roll:

Pulling the engine is not bad. The design was for easy maintenance in the field. The main thing you need is a good overhead hoist. I am going to be pulling one in a few weeks myself.
TM 9-2320-209-34-2-1, section 2-3 gives the engine removal procedure. The manual is PDF#048881 on the govt. website.
I would have some heavy steel square tubing, some heavy casters, and a welder on hand. You will probably want to build an engine stand to hold this beast up.

My uncle has a 4ton engine stand I can borrow.

I just pulled mine. I used a skytrax offroad forklift. It was cake easy. I had the thing ready to pull in about 6 hours of effort.

Just make sure you mark all of the connections well! There are quite a few air tube connections to the engine.

Although designed so the whole power pack, including radiator, can be pulled as a unit, I always remove the radiator. Take the top shifter off of the transmission and leave the trans attached to the motor. Disconnect the trans-to-transfer shaft and clutch linkage. Disconnect wires, cables, tach cable, linkage, fuel line, air intake, motor mount bolts and anything else connecting the motor to truck and you should be good to go, if I didn't forget something. Make use of the lifting loops on top of the motor.

You shouldn't need to pull the engine if all you are doing is replacing a blown head gasket!

You can use the forklift to pull the very heavy heads off, to have them resurfaced, and leave the engine in the truck! :roll:

Engine removal isn't bad at all. HEAVY, but not too tough. I left the tranny and bell in when I pulled the Multifuel to slap in the CAT. Small ratchet straps are great for holding up trannies. Don't do what I did and run out of room on the hoist and have to let the air outta the front tires so that the pan would clear the bumper. Again...HEAVY.
