Quick Brain Pick! Hummer at Jefferson City

We picked up a Hummer from Jefferson City, well, we are going to.... The paperwork is done and we are headed down Monday to get it. It is supposed to be complete, running good, missing a head light switch. I have sourced one of those to take along.


Is there anything in particular to watch out for? I have lots of 6.2 experience, but zero Hummer experience. I am looking forward to running it home.


The City is sending us down in a Crown Victoria. I plan to take a tow strap anyway. Surely a Crown Vic can at least drag it off on a side road while we go for parts or something. I wanted to take my deuce, but got vetoed. A one ton truck with a hitch for my tow bar would have been nice.....


We should be coming back either Monday afternoon or Tuesday, depending upon what else we run into with the vehicle. My plan is to run along US 50 into western Missouri, then setting up to catch US 56 to Herington. That should run us south of the big cities and keep us fairly rural and no minimum speeds to try to maintain.


I would imagine it will be right at home in the 45 mph range.


Short notice, but any hard to find stuff besides brake fluid that we should try to source?

Our department recently got one out of Iowa. We had ours shipped east on a trailer. But, ours arrived in very good condition. No missing parts. Since you are wanting to drive it back here are a few things you should probably have.

Extra belts, at least one of each - 3VX500 and 3VX360
Ear plugs!!!
engine fluids
seat cushion (if not in good condition)
misc good luck charms
a few towels in case it rains - they leak!
spare tire and possible tire change tools, although it may come with the tools.
non-ammonia window cleaner and paper towels.
Basic SAE tools - wrenches, sockets, etc


Remember, they are 24v, so any electric device you want to use may need a converter, although my cell phone charger works on 12 and 24v.

I'm sure there are other things as well, but those are some of the necessities.

I would think it would be smart to take something that could pull the thing with a tow bar. Anything that can go wrong on a HMMWV will! That is a pretty good drive on a vehicle that you don't know a lot about. You could get lucky though. HMMWV tires come apart after sitting a while so if you can throw a couple spares in the back of your Vic, do it.

Keep in mind that the headlamp switch may be the only part they noticed missing!

We will have a Crown Vic full of tools. Other than brake fluid, we can make a quick stop at any parts store for the rest, thanks for those belt numbers. We will grab a set.

I already have a recovery tub with blue towels, Marvel Mystery Oil, window cleaner, DOT5, Sea Foam, Power Service, Rotella, Rain X, PB Blaster, hand cleaner, solvent .... basically my deuce recovery kit, minus the big tools.

The guy going with is the best diesel mechanic the city has. He is like me, mechanical stuff comes easy for him. Are hoses something really unusual, or can we pick them up at parts stores as well?

This one was supposed to have been one of the nicest ones they had available, time will tell. If we cannot get it home, guess we will find a place to ditch it and head back with a truck and trailer.

One nice thing about this recovery, the credit card damage if any is not mine, if it is a dead horse, it is not mine and if we have to leave it, I am not out. Besides, I am getting paid for it!

I have always enjoyed recoveries though and will be pretty disappointed if we do not get it home.

I got the link and I have a spare switch now. I also salvaged a turn signal lever, just in case they meant that switch. Wish I had some photos to scan through! Thanks! Glen
