Rear Axle Grease

Getting ready to put the hubs, new bearings and seals on the M35A2 rear axle. How much extra grease (if any) goes into the hub between the bearings. I tried to find other posts, but have missed it.

i just lightly coated the inside of mine.

I didn't put any. From what I've been told. The military filled that entire cavity with grease for field storage. In other words, if you were out in the field and needed to repack your bearings, the grease was right there for your use.

I always put a light coating in any hubs I do. I was told 30+ years ago one of the reasons for doing this was it could help prevent any material shed by one bearing, because of wear or failure, from migrating to the other. Sounded good to me at the time and it can't hurt anything. Hasn't caused me any problems over the years and can't say it has prevented any either.

i pack the hub full. If you dont you have to repack every so often whereas if you pack the entire hub full the cetrifugal force ont he grease constantly supplies some to the bearings as you drive normally. Takes alot of grease but why wouldnt you do this while you had it apart?

I packed mine full that's the way they came. Hubs run cool. However I used high temp grease

There's absolutely no reason to put any grease in the between cavity. If you have plenty of extra grease to get rid of then go for it. Either way it wont help or not help the bearings. In my thinking I would think it would just help retain the heat in the hubs. Been working on heavy equip for 25 years and just don't see any use. I drive my deuces on some extra long road trips and hubs run nice and cool.Just my

With grease in the trouff it wil keep pressure on the bearings /without grease it will want to walk out of them. ALLWAYS pack the trouff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
