Use a needle torque wrench, measure the amount of torque it takes too start too turn the tire before you loosen nut (put socket/wrench on pinion nut start turn wrench, measure torque), usually its between 5-15 ft. lbs. When you tighten the bolt back down use that measurement so you don't tighten nut down too tight. This measurement is called bearing preload. http://ridgerocktools.com/Images_U/28200821524PM03703.jpg Here's a pic of a needle torque wrench.

The Pinion Preload is the rotational torque you would get if you placed a dial Indicating Inch pound torque wrench on the pinion nut and turned it without the carrier installed, it measures the free rotational force required to turn the assembled pinion gear and is required so your Pinion bearings will fully seated and prevents them from being too loose.
