rear differential problem

Hey gang,

I had a leak from the top of my rear differential at the rear output shaft.

I pulled the flange, the shims(4) and the retainer (3) I can't seem to figure out how to copy an image from my TM's and post it here...Sorry.
TM 9-2320-209-34-2-1 page 10-51 frame 8.
I found one of the shims in the shim pack was backwards to it was blocking the oil from running back into the differential.

I pressed out the seal in the retainer (3) and replaced it with no issues.

I cleaned and put back (all the shims). I did make sure they were not blocking the oil return hole. I also ONLY worked on one side of the differential so there is no way I mixed up or missed a shim.

Anyway, after re-assembly I took her for a drive. I had no leaks at all but the retainer housing (the one I took off and pressed in a new seal) was pretty hot to the touch. The splined shaft was hot as well. Not so hot your spit sizzles on it but pretty hot to the touch. Probably 100-120 degrees.

Discusses if the rolling torque is too high, add some (thicker) shims. It does not specify sizes to add. It only says "thicker".

Now my questions:
Would a new seal cause this temperature rise?
If not, any ideas why it's running hot even with the exact shims put back?

I'm thinking about tearing it down again to make sure the bearing race is seated properly but before that, I thought I'd ask my brothers.

Why suspect the bearing if you didn't even touch it... or alter its preload?
Definitely the new seal is causing this: to stiff, to much interference, wrong size or material? Installed dry with no grease between inner and outer lip? Can we assume the friction surface of the companion flange was found OK (no rust pitting or deep grooves...???)
Pull the C- flange only and check its suface, especially where the seal lips are working. Eventually put it in a lathe, turn down barely to eliminate any old wear marks and give it a nice polish with emery cloth. Coat with light grease before installing and try again.
