what manual would show the breakdown of the 900 series 5 ton starter... and maybe rebuild instructions?

Assuminig you are asking about the 800 series (like in your avatar), the TM 9-2320-260-34-1 states that there are three types of starters available for your truck.

Leece-Neville

Prestolite
TM 9-2920-248-35

From the TM 9-2320-272-24-2 it show the Tech Manual is

You won't have much luck with the Prestolite . Had to put a Declo in mine when it went down the creek.

When I got my M923A1 the starter was not working. I took it off and just took it to a starter repair shop, $125 to repair it.
