I just about beat myself up trying to figure out why I couldn't start the truck today, after being on the battery charger for the past few days.

Checked the battery water, and yep, down to the top of the plates on the aft battery. :?

Off to get some distilled water.

By the way, the fore battery had a solid 12.5V or so, and the aft battery read 10.00 after being on the charger. I figured, hey, maybe it was really low before (and it was, indeed). As soon as tried to put any load on the system, system voltage dropped to almost nil.

beat bats can do that, say they are good, but hold no load, also, a weak bat may show no signs of its life passing untill the bitter end if the truck is a top runner/ starter and the bat does not have to work to start said truck, best advise is run desulphaters all the time, and a clean bat and a full bat will give the longest trouble free life for sure.

Yep, these babies were fine until they finally died. And, I run a solargizer on each one.

Even though just one battery was DOA, I have two new Interstate blems en route for $70 each - cheap insurance on that second battery. I figure (as you say) that since failure can be so sudden, I may as well replace it while everything is apart.
