repacking wheel bearings/hub

Well i'm ready to start repacking my wheel bearings on my M211, but had a question for you guys. In between the two wheel bearings is an area about an inch deep and goes wheel bearing to wheel bearing. On my truck this area was full of grease, but i'm not sure if it's grease that spewed out of the bearings and went into this area overtime or if this area is supposed to be packed full of grease along with the bearings? Hope I haven't confused you guys too much, but does anybody know what i'm talking about? Thanks.

I don't have any experience with the M211...howerver, on the M37, it is common practice to smear some grease on the inside of the hub between the two bearing races in order to prevent the inside of the hub from rusting... It's not packed with grease, just a thin coating...

I've also encountered a pound or two of grease in this area in my deuce hubs before (multifuel deuces, but I don't think that matters). I can see smearing some in there to prevent rust, but I don't see why it would be helpful to pack a bunch of grease in that area.

I heard someone at a Power Wagon rally once tell another person that they should "put some grease in the hub" in order to prevent rusting... With directions like that (instead of specifying a thin film) it's not hard to think that someone might have thought that they were supposed to pack the hub... :)

I run into this at work when one technician, who has read a specification or SOP, then tells somebody else how to do a job. The translation suffers some...
