Reverse shift slop?

When I shift into reverse, it seems like there is a lot of slop in the drive train, similar to a failing U joint problem I had in an old F250. I went under and grabbed the drive shaft, but there isn't any play in it.
Any ideas? It has been doing this for as long as I can remember and doesn't seem to get worse, but it makes me very nervous.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Make sure it is in neutral, both tranny and transfer case. then check the u joints. Check transfer case and differential for correct oil levels. There is some play in the locking rear axel that is normal. If it is not getting worse or making more noise, relax and enjoy the ride.
