Run on starter, not relay caused

After replacing my starter a couple of months ago, I have been having some issues and today tried to isolate where the actual issue may be. I disconnected the wire from the under dash relay( I have done the doghead mod) to the solenoid and made a jumper to connect directly to +24v from the rear batt. When I connected the jumper to the 24 volts the starter cranked but when I removed the wire, the starter kept going until I disconnected the batteries. I am guessing the mechanism inside the solenoid that disconnects when the key is released is bad? I cant see it being anything else as the only connections to the starter when I did this were the main 24v line and the jumper to the solenoid in place of the normal ignition system. Am I correct in this, that I need to just remove and replace the starter?
Thanks much!!

Did you check for gear mesh as outlined in the TM?

If the bendix drive is bound, it could cause a run-on.

Or, as you were thinking, a bad solenoid could be the issue.
