Since I picked up the deuce the speedo has not worked. I disconnected it at the drive gear and spun it up with a cordless drill and the speedo works fine. I took the gear drive off and took it apart and cleaned it and it looks fine. There is a "paddle" that sticks out from the gear drive into a rectangular slot in the transfer case, I suspect this is where the problem is inside the transfer. Anyone have this problem? The cure? Let me guess, the transfer will have to come apart? Lets hope not, but no such luck I'm sure.

RE: Speedometer Troubleshooting Help

Mark:
My speedo has been on stike for some time and I have been too busy to chase down the issue. I will try to get a look this long weekend and let you know but for this reason I am glad the GPS works under my ragtop.

RE: Speedometer Troubleshooting Help

Mine was missing a small adaptor that goes inside the transfer case. It interfaces between the angle adaptor and inside the transfer case. If you take the nut off from the area where the angle adator connects to the transfer case you can see if the part is in there or not. If you take the angle adator off and do not see anything that could driver the adaptor you are probably missing the part I am talking about. Take a look at the exploded diagrams in the parts manuals.

Well after much head scratching and sleepless nights I figured out why the speedo was not working. Actually it was working but backwards! I never looked at it when backing up as I was looking in the mirrors. After messing around with it tonight I had my son in the cab and when I reversed he said dad its working, so I tried it again and sure enough it was working only when I was in reverse. I took the adapter off the transfer again(5th or sixth time)and noticed that on the label it says rotation "same". I took this to mean that when I turned the part that goes in the transfer clockwise the speedo cable end should go clockwise, it did not, it turned the opposite direction. I brought it to work to get a second opinion and my co-worker said try swapping the ends, as it turns out the speedo end and the end with the grease fitting are the same threads and the internal gear is center mounted, so I swapped ends and sure enough now the roation is the "same". Not only did it work but with the opposite orientation there is more clearance to mount it as the body of the adapter is taller on one side. I am not sure how it got reversed only perhaps a factory blunder as it looks like it never had been taken apart and it was cleaner than the area around it. Oh well another part of the puzzle solved.

I apologize for dredging up this old thread, but Mark hit on exactly what I just discovered on my deuce, no speedo, but worked off the drill. So I disconnected the drive lines so I could fiddle with it by myself in the barn. And sure enough in reverse the speedo indicated, but in forward gears nothing. A quick swap of the grease zerk and the speedo cable end on the t-case adapter, and like magic I've got speedo!

Thanks Mark!
