Spindle Not Lining up

I was replacing the U joint on my 1984 m1009. After I put new rubber seals on the yolk and bolted the spindle and slash shield on I noticed that the end of the spindle is slightly covering the slot on the yolk where the snap ring fits in. No matter how many times I try I can't get the spindle back far enough or the yolk out enough to get the snap ring in place. Is there a special technique to doing this or am I just doing something wrong? Does anyone have any idea?

Pull the shaft toward you to put the snap ring on.

You can also reach around and push the joint assy out a bit.
