Hello, i have owned a 1986 m1009 for almost 2 yrs have rebuilt the engine and thought i knew a lot about this truck, have came to this website for many helpful tips for resolving problems but today i have a new one i may not know what to do.

I went to go start my truck and nothing appeared to be displaying when i put the key in the ignition, first thing was to check the batteries but i had them on a trickle charger and know they are good, both reading at 16volts, so that is good, all connections are good tight and even sanded them down to make sure there was no burrs or anything getting in the way. I do know i have a bad alternator the one that chargers the front battery, closes to the grill of the truck. The other day i turned on the ignition key on and put the truck in nuetral so i could pull it towards the from of the garage and heard sparking from inside the hood, opened and noticed that my left alternator one on drivers side, the red power cable that connects to the bolt had dicconnected from the bolt, well the bolt had kind of melted in the middle and broke loose.. or whatever... want to now if this problem could be why i am not receiving any power to my truck when i turn the ignition key on and try to start my baby. She has been running like a champ the only issue i knew was i needed a new alternator. Everything else electrical has been replaced except both alternators. Also checked the fuses under the dash and all are good

Thanks for any helpful tips or finds.

I also have a starter switch that i can hook up to the starter and maybe start the truck that way if i can override the ignition if that could work but not a 100% sure how that works for i have never used it on this truck but on another car.

It sounds like GEN 1 may have a short. It is possible that some of the fusible links have burned out as well. You'll need to check all the wiring relating to the battery cables and fusible links.
