Steering gear box

Well I thought I would ask this as a two part question.
First, what is the best safety wire to use, and best way to attach it to the horn button wire lead to remove it and replace it through the bottom of the gear box?

Second, when I run the new wire lead, obviously, I am going to loose some gear oil. I hope not all of it, but we'll see. Can the truck be driven without the gear oil in the steering gear box, without destoying anything? I will need to bring it a few miles to he shop where it can be refilled.

I never lost gear lube replacing the horn wire. I used a solid wire about six feet long as a lead wire to attach the replacement with tape.
