Temp Sending Unit

I believe i have a bad sending unit. the gauge goes from o to 240 in an instant after 5 minutes of hills. i checked the block with an ir gun and it read 170-180 which i am told is normal.

Is it ok to run the deuce with a bad sending unit? will coolant still flow? and what is the proper sending unit to order?

The temp sending unit simply controls the gauge reading. Nothing else.

Do you have the -34 and -20P TMs? both the diagnostic proceedure for a malfunctioning gauge and the part number(respectively), is listed in each one.

Coolant flow, t stat motion, fan blade rotation and air moving across the radiator is ALL controlled my the Temp sending unit. In fact you are controlled by the sending unit.

But really you can still run it, just replace the sending unit ASAP so you can see what is happening.

I'm thinking bad connection, causing noise (induced current) or a bad ground, followed by a bad sensor. If you are getting full swing deflection on your meter, you can burn out or degrade the temp meter on your instrument panel as well. Hopefully, it won't go that far.. I have the meter at part number MS24543-2, which should be on the front face of the meter. I also have them new in the box if you ended up needing one let me know via PM.

I wouldn't drive it too much with a bad sending unit. If a problem does develope you won't have as much warning. The sending unit itself won't affect the engine temp or anything else.

Don't believe that the gauge will be harmed by the circuit being open, it should be designed to indicate an "open" or "shorted" sending unit.

The gauge specifications should specify a certain permitted amount of overload, but don't have any (spec). Do you have access to them?

You really dont want to replace the sending unit unless you are 100% CERTAIN it is bad, and nothing else could possibly be the problem. It's a Brass sender threaded into an Aluminum casting, and over time, the 2 tend to fuse themselves together, making for a **** of time removing it. Just eliminate all other possible failures before removing the sender. It might come out easy, or it might not.
